AFF Meetings MEMBERS PRESENT: Class of 2010 – Patty Infantino welcomed everyone, and introductions were made. Rhea Ittoop attended the meeting to give a personal thank you to the AFF for her trip to Capetown, South Africa and reported on her experiences there. She received $400 toward her travel through the Global Health Office. Rhea is President of the International Health Group this year and works with the Global Health Office at UMDNJ to help 1st year students who want to travel abroad for International Health Work. The minutes were approved from the November 16th meeting with one correction. “John Sterling appropriated $1200 for piano tuning” was amended to say John Sterling made a motion to set aside $1200 for piano tuning.” Patty Infantino seconded it and minutes were approved. Thank you Letters Dr. Laumbach read “Thank you” letters from Nayo Matthews, Vanna Parikh, Marianna Vigiola Cruz and Stephen Rosenberg. Dr. Laumbach mentioned that a good portion of these travel funds went through the Global Health Office. Students present at conference at different societies where they are invited. Mr. Shingala asked if there is any other outside funding for the student travel. Dr. Laumbach stated that most students do this as missions out of the goodness of their hearts. However, AFF is the major source of funding for the Global Health Office. Jon Sterling said he would send Jean an email to get the 2nd letter for appeal letter sent out. Jon requested to see if Jean can get the number of families who donated from the people at the Foundation of UMDNJ. Jean will call Tammy to see if they keep records. Yogesh said he was willing to call people if necessary. Lou Penn thought we should start with 3 years and down for donations. Student Travel: Dr. Laumbach read over the Budget. She requested $1500 to add to Student Travel as we are presently $800 in deficit. Jon made a motion to appropriate $1500 and it was approved. Ginny Olive mentioned to possibly have US health iniatives to fund for travel. Patty agreed and Yogesh agreed that this was a good idea. Dr. Laumbach mentioned that we are the only medical school who has a Global Health Office. Last year Global Health supported 15 students. Ela would like to see a U.S. program for Health also. Dr. Laumbach will get more information on students who are doing work in health in the United States. We will explore to see how AFF can get help and would like to encourage this. Jon suggested that Dr. Escobar talk about Global Health at the Orientation BBQ. Jon asked if the Student Discretionary fund stayed the same. Dr. Laumbach confirmed that it does because students are required to pay the money back. Committee Reports: Stitches - Lou Penn said she is stocked until the Orientation BBQ in August. We have enough money to do the Red Paks again. Lou would like to email the parents of 4th year students with a flyer to see if they are interested in buying stethoscope pins for their students who graduate. May not be able to get 4th year parents email addresses. It was then suggested to send out a mailing prior to Graduation. Lou suggested that maybe we could sell the pins for 1st years at the BBQ. Stethoscope Pin is: $19.00 – Wholesale Patty praised Lou Penn for her efforts with the clothing sales. Lou thanked Michele Rolleri and Barbara Colaco for helping her. She mentioned that new items were sold as well. New Meeting Time: Patty spoke on Jane’s behalf to see if it is agreeable to start the AFF meetings at 7:00 PM. The consensus was 7:15 PM for start of the meeting and dinner at 6:45 PM.
AFF / Alumni Brunch: Sunday, April 25th Menu - $12.75 per person (same as last year) Need help with the following:
Mariya Brown offered to help Ginny with the Brunch. Patty requested that all the centerpieces be covered from AFF funds. Ginny paid for them herself last year. Patty thanked everyone for volunteering for the Brunch. New Business BBQ – August 7th from 1:00 – 4:00 PM Dr. Laumbach mentioned about how our school has a Clash of Classes – It’s a Field Day for all the four classes. Dr. Laumbach also mentioned that the new class of 2014 will have 120 students admitted. The TV in Student Lounge is not hooked up to cable yet. Regarding the Camden TV, there were no other ideas as to how to use the funds for an alternative item or items. Therefore, Dr. Laumbach will ask Adarsh to proceed with ordering the TV for Camden. This will benefit up to the graduation of the Class of 2013. Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM. The next AFF meeting will be May 10, 2010: Respectfully submitted,
