A Parent's Perspective - 2009
By Liz Ellway
A wonderful evening was had by all at The State Theatre in New Brunswick on Monday, May 18, 2009, for the convocation ceremony for the graduating class of 2009. The students were welcomed to their seats with loud applause from their family, friends and faculty members.
Dean Amenta made the opening address, congratulating the students on all their hard work and the good results they had achieved on Match Day. The commencement address was given by Nancy Snyderman , the chief medical editor for NBC News. She told the class to enjoy their success and remain lifelong learners. Although the new graduates were armed with knowledge and good skills, she encouraged them to become good listeners to their patients. Snyderman also reminded the students that the small gesture of a pat on the hand or shoulder could mean more than a hundred words to a patient who needs reassurance.
Amusing student addresses were given by Rehan Shamin from the New Brunswick campus and Abhay Singh from the Camden campus. Both felt that they had made lifelong friends and future colleagues during their four years at RWJMS.
Before the students were hooded, several faculty members spoke in introducing the MS and PhD degree recipients. Also the Foundation of UMDNJ recognized Nancy Hayes and Sundip Patel with Excellence in Teaching Awards and Professors Inouye and Lewis for Excellence in Research . These awards were presented by George Heinrich, vice chair and CEO of the Foundation of UMDNJ
The highlight for the families and students was the introduction of the MD recipients. Dr Susan Rosenthal called the names of each recipient while six members of the faculty helped place the hoods on the students as they walked across the stage. There were lots of smiles, hugs and time for photographs after the ceremony was completed.
This year’s commencement was held at the Izod Center where Dr. William F. Owen was also sworn in as the 4th President of UMDNJ.
